About the Breed
- The Border Terrier is one of the terrier breeds that emerged along the border of England and Scotland where terriers are used to hunt fox, otter and vermin for centuries. The Border, Bedlington and Dandie Dinmont are believed to have a common ancestor. With a plain brown coat and self-effacing manner the Border Terrier is a cheerful and sensible companion for those who enjoy a terrier that thinks for himself. Originally a working terrier, the Border Terrier still exhibits the characteristics suitable for following its quarry underground, cornering it, and either dispatching it or harrying it from its lair. With an otter head, described as "moderately broad and flat in skill with plenty of width between the eyes and ears. A slight, moderately broad curve at the stop rather than a pronounced indentation. Cheeks slightly full". As a working terrier, he has a hard, wiry outer coat and dense, short undercoat, adapted to the rough fields, weather and rain of his homeland. The Border's hid is thick and loose-fitting to allow him to move through openings underground and protect him from scratches and bites. The Breed Standard Breed History
